Trichy is abuzz with activity as preparations intensify for the 12th State Conference of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), scheduled for March 9. The massive conference venue at Siruganur is spread over nearly 400 acres, supplemented by another 200 acres dedicated to vehicle parking along the Trichy-Chennai National Highway.
An estimated 10 lakh DMK party cadres from across Tamil Nadu are expected to gather at this politically pivotal event, which comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The site features extensive arrangements, including a grand stage, ultra-large LED screens, dining facilities, and adequate drinking water stations. Road improvements around the venue are also in progress to accommodate the anticipated heavy traffic.
A ceremonial 100-foot pole has been erected for the party's flag-hoisting, with the event commencing at 3 pm. DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to officially open the conference by hoisting the flag at 5:30 pm. Simultaneously, preparations continue for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to speak on March 11, at a nearby 22-acre site near Edamalaipatti Pudur.
The NDA rally will take place off the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway, about 5 km from Trichy International Airport. BJP Tamil Nadu State President Nainar Nagendran announced that the meeting anticipates a turnout exceeding five lakh people. In parallel political maneuvers, the DMK and Congress concluded their seat-sharing agreement, securing 28 assembly seats for Congress. Tamil Nadu Congress President K Selvaperunthagai expressed satisfaction with the deal. He affirmed a united front against 'divisive and fascist forces'.
As the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly faces elections by mid-2026, the MK Stalin-led Secular Progressive Alliance prepares for a showdown against the rival BJP-AIADMK-led NDA. Adding intrigue, actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is poised to convert the election into a three-way contest. The DMK dominated the 2021 Assembly polls with 133 seats, with the Secular Progressive Alliance capturing 159 seats in total, against 75 secured by the NDA.
