LPG Squeeze: India Urgent Push for Piped Gas Amidst Supply Crisis

India faces a significant LPG supply crisis exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, impacting 60% of its imports. The government is urging states to expedite piped gas approvals to alleviate pressure on cooking gas availability. Efforts include increasing domestic LPG production, promoting gas alternatives, and tightening supply management.

India is grappling with an acute LPG supply shortage due to war-induced disruptions in West Asia, affecting a majority of imports. This critical situation has prompted the Centre to urge states to fast-track piped gas project approvals as part of a strategic shift aimed at mitigating pressure on crucial cooking gas availability.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, highlighted the measures taken, including boosting domestic LPG output and prioritizing household consumption over commercial use. An ongoing issue with panic bookings continues, despite the government's assurance of sufficient supply. LPG production has increased by 38% to address kitchen needs.

The government also emphasized the development of a city gas distribution network, encouraging LPG users to switch to piped gas systems. In light of disrupted imports from key routes and providers, allocations for industries and non-essential commercial operations have been curtailed to support household demand and avoid immediate shortages.
