In a significant political move, former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, a leading figure in Assam's political arena, has announced his candidacy for the upcoming legislative assembly elections from the Barhampur constituency. Representing the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Gohain predicts the electorate will vote the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power. His decision, he asserts, was made with careful consideration and reflects his confidence in the local party's ability to lead.

During a conversation with ANI, Gohain elaborated on his departure from the BJP, a move he finalized by joining the AJP in November 2025. Emphasizing the shift from a national to a regional party, he shared, 'The public will determine the electoral outcome, and current efforts suggest a desire for change.' His declaration underscores the shifting political dynamics ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly Elections.

In a ceremony attended by AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and other party leaders, Gohain formally aligned with the AJP, marking a pivotal moment in Assam's political scene. The move comes on the heels of the Election Commission of India's announcement regarding the assembly election schedule, with all 126 constituencies set to vote on April 9 and results expected by May 4. The BJP, seeking a third term, faces formidable challenges from both regional parties and a resurgent Congress.
