India's Hydro Power Surge: Boosting Renewable Energy

The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a new small hydro power development scheme with a budget of Rs 2,585 crore, aiming to augment renewable energy capacity by 1,500 MW. This move is seen as pivotal for India's environmental goals.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, after the cabinet meeting, emphasized the scheme's significance in the nation's renewable energy portfolio. India plans to harness its vast potential, with projects spanning over 7,133 sites, allowing for environmentally friendly run-of-river developments while avoiding dam constructions and displacement.

Currently, India operates 5,100 MW of small hydro power across 1,196 sites. The new projects, each ranging from 1 MW to 25 MW, will unfold over five years until 2030-31, drawing an expected Rs 15,000 crore in private investments.
