The Indian government has announced a five-year initiative aimed at boosting the productivity of the cotton sector with an investment of Rs 5,659.22 crore. This mission, approved by the Union Cabinet and spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to address issues plaguing the industry such as declining growth and quality concerns.
The Mission for Cotton Productivity aligns with the '5F vision', which connects the journey from farm to fibre, factory, fashion, and finally foreign markets. It focuses on developing high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds resistant to common diseases and pests while scaling up modern crop production technologies in collaboration with local governments and agricultural universities.
By 2031, the mission aims to ramp up cotton production to 498 lakh bales, ensuring a high-quality supply for the industry and bolstering exports. About 32 lakh farmers are expected to benefit from this initiative, ultimately leading to greater self-reliance in the cotton sector.
