High Tensions and Tight Security: Eurovision in Vienna Amid Protests
Vienna police are preparing for potential disruptions as protests are expected over Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. With major broadcasters boycotting due to Israel’s actions in Gaza, the event coincides with Nakba Day, amplifying tensions. Enhanced security will include drone bans and airport-level screenings.
Vienna police are gearing up for potential disruptions at the Eurovision Song Contest amid expected protests against Israel's participation. Authorities anticipate blockades and attempts to disrupt the event, one of Vienna's largest security operations, driven by tensions surrounding Israel's Gaza conflict.
This year's contest sees boycotts from major broadcasters like RTVE and RTE due to Israel's conduct, coinciding with Nakba Day, commemorating Palestinians' loss of land. Demonstrations both opposing and supporting Israel's participation are planned, estimated to attract 3,000 attendees.
Security measures include a drone ban near the contest venue, with assistance from the FBI to address cyber threats. Despite Austria's high terrorism alert level, no specific threats to the event have been identified, although airport-level security screenings will be in place.
