Bengali Film Producers Demand Change Amid Political Shift
Following BJP's major win in the West Bengal elections, Bengali film producers demanded changes at the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA), reflecting concerns over political influence and calling for inclusive industry governance amidst claims of TMC-controlled syndicates limiting opportunities for politically diverse artists.
In the wake of the BJP's sweeping victory in the West Bengal assembly elections, the Bengali film industry finds itself in a state of flux. Producers gathered at the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA) on Tuesday, pushing for a reform in its operations influenced by the state's new political climate.
Producers and distributors, suspected to be politically inclined towards the BJP, submitted a letter to EIMPA demanding a meeting within three days. They aim to discuss the evolving political scenarios and their potential impact on the Bengali entertainment sector. Senior figures like producer Ratan Saha and director Milan Bhowmik highlighted the need for this urgent assembly.
Amidst these developments, EIMPA President Pia Sengupta, under scrutiny for alleged ties to the Trinamool Congress, asserted the association's apolitical stance. Sengupta reaffirmed that leadership roles are elected, welcoming the BJP while maintaining traditional neutrality. This comes amid claims of a TMC-led syndicate restricting creative expression in the industry.
