Tragedy Strikes: Fatal Mine Collapse in West Bengal

A devastating incident occurred at an Eastern Coalfields Limited colliery in West Bengal, where an underground mine wall collapse led to one death and injured fifteen others due to an 'air blast'. Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, and authorities have launched an inquiry into the safety lapses and exact cause.

An underground mine wall collapsed at Eastern Coalfields Limited's colliery in Asansol, tragically claiming one life and injuring at least 15 others following an 'air blast' incident. The accident occurred around 10:30 am on Thursday when miners were working in the Parashia colliery under ECL's Kunustoria area in Jamuria.

The 'air blast' in Section 27 resulted in a violent release of pressure, throwing workers in different directions and causing chaos inside the mine. Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, involving mine safety personnel and local administration to evacuate and hospitalize the injured, including at Basra Hospital in Raniganj and Kalla Hospital in Asansol.

One worker, identified as Debayan Munda, succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have started a detailed inquiry to determine the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, workers' unions have criticized the alleged safety measure lapses and the negligence of authorities. ECL has yet to comment on the accident, assuring an investigation will follow.
