Security was intensified at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, with posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale being distributed at the Akal Takht Sahib. Bhindranwale, the former head of the radical Damdami Taksal, was killed during the infamous military operation executed by the Indian Army in June 1984.

Pro-Khalistan slogans echoed at the pilgrimage site as attendees commemorated Bhindranwale on his death anniversary. In response, Punjab Police have ramped up security measures, with officers stationed around the landmark. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh confirmed the implementation of comprehensive safety protocols, including checkpoints across Amritsar to thwart potential illegal activities.

Special Director General of Police, Praveen Kumar Sinha, previously assessed the city’s security deployment, affirming that around 4,000 personnel are actively ensuring peace. Sinha emphasized that the numerous events around the Blue Star anniversary amplify security sensitivities. June 6 marks the day when Indian forces entered the Golden Temple under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s orders to suppress separatist actions by Bhindranwale, who reportedly stockpiled weapons within the complex.

Operation Blue Star faced severe criticism, and months later, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, on October 31, 1984. The operation remains a deeply controversial chapter in Indian history. (ANI)
