The mayors of Turkey's Diyarbakir, Van and Mardin metropolitan municipalities, all HDP members, were dismissed early Monday by the Interior Ministry over terrorism charges. They were accused of diverting money and resources from their municipalities to support the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) agenda.
According to an official statement by the ministry, the mayors of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van provinces – Adnan Selcuk Mizrakli, Ahmet Turk and Bedia Ozgokce Ertan – respectively have been suspended.
The Ministry of the Interior said the mayors' roles would be taken over by their provincial governors, who are appointed by the central government.
It added the mayors already had active cases against them in which they were accused of crimes such as establishing or spreading propaganda for a terror group or else just being a member.
The PKK is designated as a "terrorist" organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
