Five persons, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly assaulting and robbing an elderly autorickshaw driver in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Tuesday. The Kasarwadavli police on Monday nabbed Abhishek Saroj, Abhishek Singh, Vikas Sahani, Chandresh Mourya and Rupali Chouhan from Kalwa and Titwala towns of Thane district, senior inspector Kishore Khairnar said.
The incident took place on February 18, when one of the accused men and Chouhan hired the victim's autorickshaw from Ghatkopar and went towards Fountain Hotel in Thane, he said. While Chouhan got off at the hotel, the man proceeded towards Majiwada and en route another accused, who was on a scooter, stopped the autorickshaw and picked a quarrel with the 60-year-old victim, Khairnar said.
The accused allegedly assaulted and robbed him of Rs 1,200, before fleeing the spot, he added. The victim registered a police complaint, following which the CCTV footage from the area was examined and the accused were arrested, the official said.
On interrogation, the police found that Abhishekh Saroj and the victim were locked in a land dispute and the former wanted to rob him with the help of his friends, he said..
