Tribal Settlements in Crisis: Diarrhoea Outbreak Claims Six Lives

A diarrhoea outbreak has claimed six lives in tribal settlements in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve over the past two weeks. Health officials confirmed four deaths on May 24 and two more on June 5. Contaminated water is suspected to be the cause.

A diarrhoea outbreak in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) has resulted in the deaths of six individuals from tribal settlements, Health officials reported. The first four fatalities occurred on May 24, with two additional deaths being recorded on June 5. The affected individuals were residents of Thadasalatti and Ittrarai villages, areas known for their significant population of daily laborers.

Following complaints from locals and a social service organization, Health officials dispatched medical teams to these villages. The teams provided immediate treatment to the ill and conducted health camps. Currently, four individuals are receiving treatment in government hospitals in Sathyamangalam and Chamarajanagar for diarrhoea.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the consumption of contaminated water is the likely cause of the outbreak. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are taking steps to prevent further cases.
