Uniform Healthcare Standards: Implementing Standard Treatment Workflows

The Union Health Ministry has urged states to implement 157 Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) to ensure uniform healthcare standards. Developed by ICMR, these workflows cover 28 specialties, aiding in the rational use of drugs and diagnostics across hospitals. The initiative seeks to simplify and standardize patient care through an app-based tool.

The Union Health Ministry has called upon states to implement 157 Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) across 28 medical specialties. These workflows, developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA) and the World Health Organization's India office, aim to ensure uniform healthcare standards and the rational use of essential medicines and diagnostics in hospitals.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra emphasized the need for a streamlined, updated approach to managing patient care. Speaking to health secretaries and the National Medical Commission, Chandra highlighted the rapid advancements and growing body of scientific evidence in the medical field. He stressed that the STWs, available as a one-page app-based tool, will regularly guide physicians at all levels of healthcare from primary to tertiary care.

Chandra noted that these standardized documents, prepared by national experts with vast cumulative experience, will help in effectively managing common and serious diseases. They are presently accessible on the ICMR website and as a mobile app. The Health Ministry seeks the collaboration of state health departments to promote and utilize these STWs in India's Public Health Care System.
