Seventeen individuals have tragically lost their lives to diarrhoea in the Jabalpur division of Madhya Pradesh during this ongoing rainy season, a regional health official announced on Thursday.

The fatalities include six each from Jabalpur and Mandla districts and five from Dindori district. Over 800 people have fallen ill due to the outbreak, stated Sanjay D Mishra, the regional director of health services, in a conversation with PTI.

These deaths have occurred within the past one and a half months. Dindori district recorded the highest number of around 350 patients, of which five succumbed to the illness. Mandla reported about 180 cases, while Jabalpur registered 150 cases across Kundam, Sihora, and Patan blocks. Tests have identified water contamination in several areas.

Health officials have advised the public to boil drinking water and maintain food hygiene to prevent further spread. The supply of borewell water has been halted, with water being delivered via tankers. Health workers are stationed in the affected areas to provide medication and are conducting door-to-door visits for public counseling. Delays in seeking treatment have exacerbated the severity of the cases, Mishra noted.
