Resident doctors at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) continued their strike for the third day on Wednesday, protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
In a show of solidarity, government doctors from the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) announced the suspension of Outpatient Department (OPD) services at all public health centers in Punjab on August 16. While elective services were affected at PGIMER, emergency services continued to operate.
The doctors are demanding expeditious justice for the victim and enhanced safety measures for healthcare personnel. Despite multiple representations to government officials, no substantial action has been taken. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the case to the CBI for investigation.
