Pfizer and BioNTech's Combo Vaccine Shows Mixed Results, Next Steps Under Evaluation

Pfizer and BioNTech have reported mixed results from a late-stage trial of their experimental mRNA vaccine designed to protect against both influenza and COVID-19. While the vaccine showed a strong immune response to influenza A, it was less effective against influenza B. The companies are now evaluating next steps.

Pfizer and BioNTech revealed that their late-stage trial of an experimental mRNA vaccine aiming to protect against both influenza and COVID-19 did not meet one of its two main goals. The combination vaccine showed a robust immune response against influenza A but weaker results against influenza B. The trial, involving 8,000 participants, indicated that the vaccine's effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 matched that of Pfizer's existing COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite the mixed results, Annaliesa Anderson, Pfizer's head of vaccine research and development, expressed optimism about the program's future. 'We remain optimistic about our combination COVID-19 and influenza program, for which we are evaluating the next steps', she said.

The companies announced they are discussing the findings with health authorities and considering adjustments to the vaccine candidate. Additionally, no safety issues were reported in the Phase 3 trial, and a separate Phase 2 trial for a second-generation mRNA flu vaccine also showed promising immune responses with no safety concerns.

The Phase 2 trial data involving 450 patients will be made available soon, offering further insights into the vaccine's potential.
