The New Zealand Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding mental health support for primary and intermediate school pupils in the Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti regions. Minister for Mental Health, Matt Doocey, announced that sustainable funding for the phased rollout of the Mana Ake programme will increase to $3.7 million annually by 2026/27.

Mana Ake, a school-based mental wellbeing initiative, is designed to equip children with essential skills such as coping with change, managing emotions, building positive relationships, and overcoming grief. The programme also offers advice, guidance, and workshops for parents, whānau, and teachers to better support children's wellbeing needs.

"Once fully implemented, Mana Ake will deliver in-school wellbeing and mental resilience support to approximately 25,500 students across more than 130 primary and intermediate schools in the regions," said Minister Doocey.

Minister Doocey emphasized that early intervention and prevention are key priorities in his mental health strategy, noting that such measures are vital for increasing access to mental health services and promoting long-term mental wellbeing for young New Zealanders. "This initiative is a strong example of a social return on investment," he added.
