The number of people out of work in Germany rose significantly less than expected in August, according to figures released by the Federal Labour Office on Friday.

The office reported that the number of unemployed grew by just 2,000 in seasonally adjusted terms, bringing the total to 2.8 million. This was far below the 16,000 increase anticipated by analysts polled by Reuters.

Despite the slight rise, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 6.0%.
