Assam Achieves Milestone in Reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality

Assam has made significant progress in healthcare, reducing its Maternal Mortality Ratio by 28 points and improving its Infant Mortality Rate, as revealed by the latest Sample Registration System report. The state's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, credited visionary leadership and healthcare workers for this achievement.

In a remarkable achievement, Assam has significantly reduced its Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), marking a 28-point decline, according to the latest data from the Sample Registration System (SRS). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on Thursday, highlighting the state's progress in healthcare parameters.

Sharing the figures on social media platform X, Sarma emphasized that Assam is no longer the state with the highest MMR in the country. The state also reported improvement in its Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), with figures dropping from 38 to 36, as per the SRS report.

The Chief Minister attributed this success to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the dedication of healthcare workers and ASHAs. The national average for MMR during 2019-21 stands at 93 deaths per 100,000 live births, while the IMR for 2021 is 27 per thousand live births.
