The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) sounded an alarm on Saturday over the escalating deaths linked to illegal drug use in Punjab, highlighting newly available data that showcases a dire situation contrary to the government's repeated assurances of eradication efforts.
NAPA's executive director, Satnam Singh Chahal, criticized the state's ruling leadership for failing to meet its commitments, including promises to end the drug crisis by May 31. Chahal pointed to the catastrophic impact on Punjab's youth and questioned the sincerity of government promises.
Chahal noted that the crisis encompasses more than narcotics, citing numerous deaths due to spurious and illegal liquor. He emphasized the necessity for robust measures to combat these issues, including the implementation of rehabilitation programs and an independent monitoring system for transparency and accountability.
