Meghalaya is in the grip of an alarming HIV/AIDS situation, with health officials reporting more than 10,000 cases, including 500 children. Ahead of World AIDS Day, concerns are mounting over the virus's spread.
Dr KL Iawbor, leading the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, highlighted East Jaintia Hills as having the highest infection rates. Most affected children belong to economically disadvantaged families, raising additional social challenges.
Dr Iawbor emphasized the urgent need for collective action to prevent further transmission, particularly as unprotected heterosexual activities dominate as the primary cause. Increased testing and awareness programs are vital steps being undertaken to address this crisis, though hesitancy remains a significant barrier.
