The Indian Coast Guard emerged as a savior on Sunday by orchestrating a life-saving medical evacuation for a 75-year-old patient in critical condition. The mission saw the patient, who was suffering from an acute subdural hematoma, airlifted from Agatti to Kochi late Saturday night.
Despite the closure of operations at Agatti's airfield, the Coast Guard swiftly activated its distress and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) protocols. A Dornier aircraft was promptly dispatched from Kochi, arriving at Agatti just over an hour later to safely embark the patient, medical staff, and the patient's spouse.
In merely three hours, the aircraft executed the entire operation, demonstrating exceptional skill in night landing at Agatti. This marked the seventh such successful medical evacuation by the ICG this year, all underlining the vital role of the Coast Guard in emergencies.
