In response to growing fears over the Nipah virus, Kolkata's Alipore Zoological Gardens is intensifying its health and safety protocols. Zoo authorities are particularly focusing on the sanctuary's fruit bats, also known as Indian flying foxes, alongside heightened sanitation and disinfection procedures, according to a senior official on Thursday.

Tripti Shah, the Alipore Zoo Director, stated in a conversation with PTI that public visitor areas, including thoroughfares, are undergoing daily disinfection. Animal enclosures are rigorously sanitized twice a day using virucidal disinfectants with hypochlorite and other agents.

Furthermore, the zoo has implemented strict waste management and enclosure sanitation measures, alongside the regular spraying of antiviral medications. Despite the health fears, the winter peak season ensures a strong visitor turnout, with no significant drop in attendance.
