A growing investigation into an illegal kidney transplant racket in Kanpur has revealed a stunning web of unqualified individuals, private hospitals, and a potentially multi-state, possibly international network, police announced on Friday.

According to Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal, the primary suspects, initially believed to be qualified doctors, were actually untrained personnel, including a technician, physiotherapist, pharmacy operator, and a dentist. Known as Rohit Tiwari alias Rahul, Amit alias Anurag, Afzal, and Vaibhav, these suspects are currently on the run.

The probe so far confirms at least six illegal transplants, involving five at Ahuja Hospital and one associated with MedLife facility, though officials anticipate more undisclosed cases. A disturbing case involves a woman who allegedly died after an unlicensed transplant, hidden under the guise of gall bladder treatment. Additionally, hospitals in the National Capital Region are under the scanner for supposedly admitting patients with forged medical documentation.
