Canada has expressed deep concern over the rising violence in Bangladesh following student-led protests, urging all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution. Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly highlighted Canada's stance in a post on X, emphasizing the need to end further violence.
Minister of National Defence Bill Blair also voiced his worries, condemning the ongoing loss of lives and attacks on students. He stressed that democratic freedoms and the rule of law must be upheld.
The protests in Bangladesh are rooted in demands for reform of the civil service quota system. The government has imposed a curfew and shut down mobile internet services to curb disinformation, with schools and universities closed indefinitely following deadly clashes.
Authorities have taken stringent measures, including a nationwide curfew after violent clashes left dozens dead. Protesters have attacked state television headquarters and torched police booths, calling for a complete shutdown.
Running battles between security forces and demonstrators continue to disrupt daily life, with widespread use of rubber bullets and tear gas, as reported by Bangladeshi media.
