In a wave of violence following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, miscreants attacked, vandalized, and set fire to at least six police stations in Chittagong. According to the Dhaka Tribune, weapons, bullets, and various pieces of equipment were looted, while homes and offices of Awami League leaders and activists were also targeted.
During the assaults, multiple police personnel were injured, and there were attempts to breach the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara. In response, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the attackers. Around the same time, the Chittagong Central Jail and Chittagong District Police Lines were also attacked, sparking further violence.
Political leaders' residences, including that of Chittagong City Corporation Mayor M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, were set ablaze. Awami League party offices and the residence of Member of Parliament ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury were similarly attacked. As news of Hasina's resignation spread, people celebrated in the streets, with processions and the distribution of sweets marking the significant political shift.
Bangladesh is now facing a fluid political situation as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation follows mounting student-led protests demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. At least 95 people have been reported dead, including 14 police officers, with hundreds more injured in recent clashes.
Sheikh Hasina arrived in India post-resignation, and while her next steps remain uncertain, reports speculate she may proceed to London.
