External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday inaugurated a water and sanitation project worth $110 million in the Maldives. Funded by India, the project spans 28 islands and aims to meet the needs of the Maldivian people and government. Jaishankar, on a three-day visit, virtually launched the initiative.
Addressing the virtual inauguration, Jaishankar asserted that the India-Maldives development partnership is designed to address local priorities. 'Our development partnership is driven by the needs and priorities of the people and Government of Maldives,' he stated, emphasizing a mix of grants, loans, and training assistance. He noted the tangible benefits delivered to the common people.
Jaishankar also highlighted climate change challenges, stressing the importance of freshwater resource availability for small island states like the Maldives. He noted the alignment with India's 'Har Ghar Jal' and 'Swachha Bharat' initiatives. He said the goal is to provide ecologically sustainable solutions for potable water access and sewage treatment, protecting island ecologies.
This project brings safe drinking water to 32 islands and introduces a sewerage system to 17 islands, impacting 28,000 Maldivians. Equipped with solar energy, the buildings support island grids. With a total funding of $110 million, it is the largest climate adaptation project in the Maldives with international collaboration.
Jaishankar expressed optimism about the project's impact on women's lives, who traditionally fetch clean water. He noted the project's contribution to Maldive's Sustainable Development Goals, enhancing climate-resilient water and sewerage systems.
Earlier, Jaishankar met Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations for regional benefit. President Muizzu thanked India for its enduring support and praised the cooperation in security, development, and cultural exchange. Jaishankar's visit follows President Muizzu's recent trip to India.
