Pakistan Faces Renewed Polio Crisis Amid Ongoing Challenges

Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries battling endemic polio. Despite massive vaccination efforts, Pakistan reported 14 new cases this year. Challenges include militancy, community frustration, and the targeting of polio workers. The recent case involves an 11-month-old from Balochistan, highlighting ongoing vaccination issues.

Pakistan continues to battle polio, with the country and neighboring Afghanistan being the only nations where the disease remains endemic. On August 10, the 14th polio case of the year was reported in Qilla Saifullah, Balochistan, bringing Pakistan's 2024 tally to 13.

Since 2015, Pakistan has recorded 362 polio cases, according to Al Jazeera. Despite administering over 300 million doses annually, with help from 350,000 vaccinators and spending over USD 9.3 billion from 2013 to 2023, the country still struggles to eradicate polio.

The highly infectious disease, which can cause limb paralysis, is spread through contaminated water, food, or contact with an infected person. Challenges persist in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militancy and community frustration hinder efforts, says Dr. Hamid Jafari of WHO. Over 50 districts are detecting the virus.

The situation is aggravated by attacks on polio workers and security personnel, with 102 deaths reported, including six this year. The latest victim is an 11-month-old infant from Qilla, Balochistan. Despite numerous vaccination campaigns, efforts lag behind the actual infection rate due to inadequate coverage and misconceptions about the vaccine.
