Md Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, has stressed the importance of maintaining balanced relations with major global powers as the new administration takes charge. According to the Dhaka Tribune, Hossain highlighted the necessity for Bangladesh to uphold good relations with all nations.
'We want to keep good relations with all. We need to maintain a balance of relations with the big countries,' the Dhaka Tribune quoted him as saying. Hossain also emphasized that restoring law and order is the interim government's primary focus, with other issues to follow upon achieving this goal.
Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed the United States' hope that Bangladesh's interim government will guide the nation towards a democratic future. Miller confirmed ongoing communication between the US and the interim government, noting the attendance of the US charge d'affaires at Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus's swearing-in as the chief advisor.
'There has been communication with the interim government. Our charge d'affaires attended his swearing-in today. I don't know if she spoke to him at the swearing-in, but she did attend. One of the things we have made clear is that we want to see the interim government chart a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh,' Miller stated during a press briefing.
Key challenges for Yunus now include restoring peace and preparing for new elections in the country. Yunus recently saw the dismissal of a bribe case related to the misappropriation of funds, just days after being acquitted in a separate labor law infraction case.
