Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a historic visit to Brunei Darussalam from September 3-4, marking the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the Southeast Asian nation. The visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.
During a special briefing in the national capital, Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East at the Ministry of External Affairs, outlined the significance of the visit. He highlighted that defence cooperation is a key pillar in the bilateral relationship and both countries are working on establishing a Joint Working Group for defence sector collaboration.
Modi's itinerary also includes a visit to Singapore from September 4-5 at the invitation of Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The Brunei leg of the trip includes discussions on various bilateral engagements such as defence, trade, investment, energy, space, technology, and more. This visit underscores Brunei's important role as a partner in India's Act East Policy and its broader Indo Pacific vision.
