An aerial confrontation in the South China Sea between an Australian P-8A Poseidon and a Chinese J-16 fighter has sparked diplomatic tension. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) plane faced an 'unsafe and unprofessional interaction' when the People's Liberation Army-Air Force (PLA-AF) released flares dangerously close, according to an Australian Defence Ministry statement.

The incident, described as a risk to the Australian aircraft and its crew, led Australia to formally express its concerns to China. "The safety of our personnel remains our utmost priority," emphasized the Defence Ministry, reiterating that their operations comply with international law while maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight.

Conversely, China's Ministry of National Defence accused Australia of provocative conduct infringing on China's sovereignty. It warned that such actions could destabilize the region, advising Australia to better regulate its military activities. The incident underscores ongoing tensions concerning military presence and policy in the contested South China Sea territory.
