Switzerland's State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Alexandre Fasel, has declared that India and Switzerland are on the brink of enhancing their economic relationship. A new bilateral investment treaty is in the works, aimed at securing investments between the two nations. This announcement was made during Fasel's conversation with ANI, where he expressed strong optimism about reaching a satisfactory agreement.

This week also saw a visit to India by Switzerland's State Secretary for Economic Affairs, who was accompanied by a delegation of 100 potential investors from Switzerland and other EFTA countries—Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Their mission: to assess investment opportunities and conditions in the Indian market. Fasel highlighted the strong mutual interest and commitment from both sides, asserting confidence in the forthcoming agreement.

Last year, a decision by Switzerland to suspend Most Favored Nation (MFN) status for Indian companies led to concerns about trade costs and taxation. However, Fasel reassured that this would not impact the free trade agreement, TIPA, which is on the path to ratification. He clarified the evolution of the MFN clause in the context of double taxation, pointing out adjustments made to align with Indian interpretations.
