In an interview, Bessent noted President Trump’s confidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping would avoid making military advances on Taiwan during his presidency. Trump, addressing local media concerns linked to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's significant US investment, highlighted that a Chinese invasion would be disastrous, according to Taipei Times.

Elbridge Colby, appointed by Trump to oversee Pentagon policy, warned that Taiwan’s fall to China would severely undermine US interests. He advocated for increased Taiwanese defense expenditure to deter Beijing, emphasizing accelerated US defense preparations.
