EU to Sever Russian Energy Ties by 2028 Amid Looming Sanctions

The European Union announced a landmark decision to ban the import of all Russian energy by January 1, 2028. The agreement follows a vote in Luxembourg on October 20, where energy ministers from nearly all EU member states endorsed the European Commission's proposal. This ruling encompasses both pipeline oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Central to the EU's REPowerEU strategy, the move aims to reduce the bloc's reliance on Russian energy, which has been markedly destabilizing amid geopolitical tensions. The European Council noted that Russian gas imports would cease by January 2026, with short-term contracts given until June of that year and long-term contracts expiring by 2028.

Denmark's Energy Minister, Lars Aagaard, highlighted the significance of the legislation, stating its critical role in the EU's path to energy independence. As the continent works to finalize the details in coordination with the European Parliament, EU officials continue to underscore the importance of maintaining territorial integrity in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
