Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has highlighted the need for a strategic partnership framework with China to address ongoing trade issues. In a conversation with Chinese officials reported by CBC News, Anand emphasized the need for Canada to engage in dialogue beyond individual issues, aiming for overall constructive and professional relations.

Anand stressed the importance of removing sectoral tariffs to provide long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes. She also pointed to Canada's trade significance, noting its $118 billion bilateral trade with China. Highlighting other concerns, Anand mentioned economic and cybersecurity issues that require structured, multilateral discussions.

Addressing issues like increasing cyber scams, as well as climate change and global governance, Anand underscored the importance of a comprehensive conversation framework. She reiterated Canada's position to balance trade relations and foster growing ties within the Indo-Pacific region. The strategic framework is seen as a first step towards a recalibrated relationship, she said.
