In a momentous development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday conducted a bilateral meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in the Indian capital. Their encounter at Hyderabad House was part of an official state visit, also attended by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas.
The meeting took place amid a backdrop of camaraderie, with European leaders having earlier paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in a ceremonial gesture that aligns with the ongoing 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, co-chaired by Modi. Floral tributes marked their respect, followed by the signing of the guestbook.
This visit coincides with the successful conclusion of talks on a landmark India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Modi extolled the agreement's significance, terming it the 'Mother of all deals,' underlining collaboration between two colossal economies that together comprise a quarter of global GDP. This FTA is seen as a complementary move to existing agreements with the UK and EFTA members.
Speaking during the Opening Ceremony of India Energy Week 2026, Modi emphasized the potential of this comprehensive deal, noting its global impact on trade and governance through shared commitment. Announced at the India-EU summit, the agreement raises India's stature as it also inks a strategic Security and Defence Partnership with the EU, following Japan and South Korea in this echelon.
EU's Kallas applauded the signing as a pivotal point for defense collaborations. These efforts reflect a broader intention to align more closely within multilateral forums and bilateral endeavors. As India's third Asian neighbor to accomplish such a deal with the EU, this marks a significant elevation in global partnerships.
