Taiwan's defense authorities have issued a stark warning about a discernible shift in Chinese Communist Party (CCP) operations targeting the island, which have transformed from sporadic efforts into a concerted, systematic campaign, reports The Taipei Times. The report highlights growing apprehension about China's deployment of cognitive warfare and 'united front' strategies aimed at influencing Taiwanese society and compromising its sovereignty. Defense Minister Wellington Koo is set to present these findings while addressing questions from lawmakers.

The report notes a substantial escalation in military pressure, with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) markedly increasing air and naval operations near Taiwan. Last year, Chinese aircraft executed approximately 3,760 sorties, a notable rise from approximately 3,060 flights the year prior, alongside frequent crossings of the Taiwan Strait's median line and incursions into Taiwan's southwestern and eastern air defense zones. Naval operations have similarly surged, with around 2,640 maritime missions noted in Taiwan's response areas, up from about 2,470 in the previous year. Experts caution that the normalization of these exercises heightens the risk of miscalculation, potentially escalating routine drills into real conflict scenarios.

Accusations in the report extend to China attempting to redefine legal boundaries by conducting 'law enforcement patrols' near Taiwan's outlying islands and around the median line. Such actions aim to represent the Taiwan Strait as Chinese internal waters, undermining Taiwan's jurisdictional claims. In response, Taiwan's military is enhancing agency coordination and strengthening ties with international allies to counter disinformation campaigns, as underscored by The Taipei Times.

Joint operational drills held in conjunction with the annual Han Kuang exercises are being leveraged to enhance combat readiness, interservice coordination, and crisis response capabilities. Public initiatives have also been launched, encompassing fact-checking mechanisms and educational programs to bolster media literacy and counterintelligence awareness. By expanding outreach and transparency around military activities, officials seek to fortify public confidence and resilience against external pressure, according to The Taipei Times. (ANI)
