Capitals acquire D Jensen from Red Wings

The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Nick Jensen from the Detroit Red Wings on Friday in exchange for defenseman Madison Bowey. The Capitals will also receive a fifth-round draft pick in 2019, while the Red Wings get a second-round pick in 2020.

Not long after the trade was announced, Washington signed Jensen to a four-year, $10 million extension, according to general manager Brian MacLellan. Jensen, 28, has recorded 15 points in 60 games in his third NHL season, tied for his most points with another month-plus still remaining on the schedule. The former fifth-round draft pick in 2009 was on the ice for 42 goals in five-on-five situations, second most on the Red Wings.

Jensen can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Bowey, 23, a second-round draft pick in 2013, played in 33 games with the Capitals, scoring a goal with five assists. His goal was a game-winner at Ottawa on Dec. 29.
