Red Wings recall first-round pick Zadina

Prized prospect Filip Zadina was recalled by the Detroit Red Wings and will make his NHL debut on Sunday against the San Jose Sharks. The 19-year-old Zadina, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, had 15 goals and 16 assists (31 points) in 45 games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.

"I'm just going to have fun and play my hockey," Zadina told reporters after Saturday's practice. "I'll play my best and we'll see if they like me and keep me next season." Detroit coach Jeff Blashill indicated that Zadina's stint won't be lengthy as the plan is for the right wing to go back to Grand Rapids and help with that team's bid for a playoff spot.

Also, if Zadina plays in more than nine games with the Red Wings, a year of his entry-level contract is burned. "I have to impress them for next season, so I know I'm going back after the nine games," Zadina said. "It's about having fun right now. It's nine games. I'm kind of nervous about it. The game tomorrow is my first NHL game. I guess every single player is nervous a little bit but I'm not under pressure. Just kind of nervous. Just go and have fun."

Zadina was on a hot streak with five goals and six assists over his last 10 games before being recalled. The Czech Republic native will be counted on to put the puck on net for the Red Wings.

"His job is to shoot the puck when he gets those passes," Blashill told reporters. "It doesn't mean he can't make a play. But I expect him to shoot pucks." Detroit assigned goalie Harri Sateri to Grand Rapids in a corresponding move. Sateri was 4-4-0 with a 2.92 goals-against average in nine appearances (seven starts).
