Dutch King Willem-Alexander has invited U.S. President Donald Trump to visit the Netherlands to attend a World War II commemoration in August, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Wednesday.
The king has asked Trump to take part in a ceremony marking the Battle of the Scheldt, a series of Allied World War II operations in the autumn of 1944.
The operations by Canadian, British and Polish troops, which cost thousands of lives, eventually freed supply routes to the U.S. and other allied forces fighting to liberate the Netherlands and Belgium.
