Vijaya Bharathi Sayani has officially taken over as the acting chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) starting June 2, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Monday.

She succeeds Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra, whose term concluded on June 1.

Justice Mishra, who assumed the NHRC's top post in June 2021, served as its eighth chairperson. He also holds the distinction of being the first non-Chief Justice of India (CJI) to be appointed to this position since the Protection of Human Rights Act was amended in 2019.

Mishra succeeded Justice H L Dattu, another former Chief Justice of India, upon his appointment. He had joined the ranks of apex court judges on July 7, 2014, and retired in September 2020.
