The Supreme Court on Tuesday demanded responses from the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) following allegations of question paper leaks and other malpractices in the NEET-UG 2024 medical entrance exam.

A vacation bench consisting of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah underscored the need for accountability, stating, ''It is not that simple that because what you have done is sacrosanct. Sanctity has been affected, so we need answers.'' Despite the gravity of the allegations, the court refrained from halting the counselling for admissions to MBBS, BDS, and other related courses.

The court has also issued notices to the Bihar government amid allegations of malpractice within the state. On July 8, following the summer vacation, the court will resume hearings and has tagged the plea filed by Shivangi Mishra and other aspirants with an earlier related petition. The alleged paper leaks have been argued as a violation of the right to equality under Article 14 of the Constitution, giving undue advantages to some candidates.
