Mercy Petition of Red Fort Attack Convict Rejected

President Droupadi Murmu has rejected the mercy petition of Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Arif, convicted in the 2000 Red Fort attack. This marks the second rejection by President Murmu since taking office in 2022. The Supreme Court had upheld Arif's death sentence, and experts suggest possible commutation due to prolonged delays.

In a decisive move, President Droupadi Murmu rejected the mercy petition of Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Arif, alias Ashfaq, who was convicted in the nearly 24-year-old Red Fort attack case. Official sources confirmed this development on Wednesday.

Since assuming office on July 25, 2022, this marks President Murmu's second rejection of such a plea.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a review petition by Arif on November 3, 2022, upholding the capital punishment. However, experts indicated that Arif could still appeal for a commutation of his sentence in the Supreme Court due to prolonged delays.
