Indian-American Couple Sentenced for Forced Labor and Abuse

An Indian-American couple has been sentenced to prison for coercing their cousin to work at their gas station through physical and mental abuse. The victim was lured under the false promise of school enrollment. The court also ordered the couple to pay restitution for the victim's suffering.

An Indian-American couple has received lengthy prison sentences for subjecting their relative to forced labor at their gas station and convenience store for over three years under false pretenses.

Harmanpreet Singh, 31, has been sentenced to 135 months in prison, while Kulbir Kaur, 43, received an 87-month sentence. The court also mandated the couple to pay their victim, Singh's cousin, USD 225,210.76 in restitution.

According to court details, the couple deceived the victim by promising assistance with school enrollment, but upon arrival in the US, he was forced to work in their store for minimal pay. The victim endured confiscation of immigration documents, threats, physical abuse, and degrading conditions. The couple also forcibly married the victim to Kaur and used the relationship to manipulate him further.
