NATO Struggles to Name Ukraine Assistance Effort

NATO countries are trying to name their effort to coordinate arms supplies and training for Ukrainian forces fighting Russia. As the Washington summit approaches, a consensus has yet to be reached, reflecting the sensitivities surrounding NATO's role in aiding Ukraine.

NATO's member countries find themselves in a unique conundrum: what to name their coordinated effort to support Ukraine's defense against Russian forces. This task, though seemingly minor, underscores the complexities of NATO's diplomatic balancing act.

Next week, leaders of the military alliance are set to endorse this initiative at a summit in Washington. However, the search for an acceptable name has proven challenging. Last month, NATO ministers agreed that the alliance would assume much of the work previously managed by the U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This group has been pivotal in coordinating military aid to Kyiv since the 2022 invasion.

Initially, officials used the term 'mission' to describe the new initiative, coining the acronym NMU - NATO Mission Ukraine. Yet, Germany objected, concerned that 'mission' implied NATO troops would be sent to Ukraine, a scenario the alliance seeks to avoid. As a compromise, officials proposed NSATU - NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, but this unwieldy name has also met resistance. With the summit on the horizon, NATO diplomats continue to search for a name that resonates.
