Major General Yair Golan: Shaping Israel’s Future Amidst Conflict
Major General Yair Golan, reflecting on his combat experience, discusses the recent Hamas attack, describing it as unprecedented. As Israel seeks ceasefire negotiations, Golan criticizes Prime Minister Netanyahu's policies, suggesting a role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza for post-war governance. Golan's Labor-Meretz union aims to influence Israel's future political landscape.
Major General Yair Golan, a veteran of nearly 40 years in combat, began to grasp the severity of the attack on Israel’s southern border about two hours after Gazan militants launched their onslaught. He hastened to the Nova Music Festival's site, where he rescued survivors from what he described as a massacre, noting 364 dead and 40 hostages taken by Hamas gunmen.
Describing the scene to Reuters, Golan compared it to nothing he had seen in Beirut, the West Bank, or the Gaza Strip. With ceasefire negotiations progressing and calls for elections growing, Golan, who won the Labor Party’s primaries and formed a union with Meretz, believes in restoring influence with nine Knesset seats as per a Channel 13 poll.
Golan’s stance mirrors Netanyahu's in some military tactics but diverges post-war governance. He advocates for the Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza with support from Arab states and Washington. Concurrently, he emphasizes creating security islands within Gaza to offer alternatives to Hamas.
