Delhi Police Labels Accused's Applications as 'Malafide'

Delhi Police described as 'malafide' the applications filed by the accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case, stating they aim to delay the trial. The court heard applications from various accused seeking updates on the investigation status. The next court proceedings are scheduled for August 8.

Delhi Police on Thursday termed as 'malafide' and aimed at delaying the trial, the applications submitted by several accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai reviewed four applications from accused individuals, including Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Meeran Haider, and Athar Khan.

Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad argued that there is no legal provision for granting the relief requested, and these applications have already delayed the trial since September 11 of last year.

Prasad cited various judgements to support the prosecution's right to further investigation without awaiting supplementary chargesheet.

The court has scheduled the next proceedings for August 8, following contentious arguments over the status of the investigation and whether to frame charges.
