In a tragic incident, a California man is in custody after fatally shooting his wife, their 6-year-old son, and his wife's parents, the police department in San Francisco Bay Area reported on Thursday.

A second son, aged 1, was also shot and remains in critical condition at the hospital, Alameda Police Department Chief Nishant Joshi revealed during a press conference.

Officers responded to a 911 call from a neighbour of the residence on Kitty Hawk Road in Alameda at around 9 pm Wednesday. The victim's father-in-law, who had been shot, sought help from the neighbour, Chief Joshi said. He managed to provide statements to officers before succumbing to his injuries.

The other family members were discovered inside the home, where the shootings are believed to have taken place.

Shane Killian was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, according to department spokesperson Sarah Henry. Killian did not resist arrest. Multiple firearms were recovered from the home, but police have not yet released a motive.

Authorities assured the public that there's no ongoing threat and that an investigation is underway.

This incident marks the 21st mass killing in the US this year, per a database by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. Nearly half of these killings have involved perpetrators targeting their own families.
