On Friday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case lodged by the ED concerning the alleged excise policy scam. However, he remains incarcerated due to a subsequent arrest by the CBI in a related matter. Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta emphasized Kejriwal's status as an elected leader, noting his over 90 days of incarceration.

The bench has referred questions regarding the legality of Kejriwal's ED arrest to a larger panel. Given the right-to-life concerns, he has been granted interim bail under the conditions set on May 10, which restricted his official activities. Furthermore, the court highlighted the necessity of his compliance with Lieutenant Governor's directions during the interim bail period.

The court's recent decision follows Kejriwal's plea challenging his March 21 arrest, upheld by the Delhi High Court. Despite being granted bail by a trial court on June 20, the ED's appeal led to its suspension. The ongoing legal scrutiny includes allegations of corruption and money laundering in the now-scrapped 2021-22 excise policy.
