Facebook has lifted the restrictions initially imposed on former President Donald Trump following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. This move places Trump on an equal footing on the platform with President Joe Biden, just days before the Republican National Convention.
The social media giant banned Trump in 2021 after his supporters stormed the Capitol. Last year, Meta, Facebook's parent company, lifted the ban but imposed 'guardrails' and 'heightened suspension penalties' for any standards violations.
In a recent move, Meta removed these restrictions, stating that Trump had not breached the conditions set after the Capitol attack. “In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” wrote Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, in a statement.
Clegg emphasized that both Trump and Biden are subject to the same 'community standards' as all other users on Facebook and Instagram. Facebook has historically been a significant tool for Trump's publicity and fundraising. However, Trump now posts frequently on his own platform, Truth Social, which he launched after being suspended by mainstream social media companies.
